Eyes Cast Down

Oil on wood, 16 x 12 inches (41 x 31 cm)

Gerald King, the artist who hosts the open studio I attended last night, referred to the technique I used for the blue background as "dither." This term is used in computer graphics but I had not heard it used to describe a painting technique. The reality of the intensity of the light on the blue background is difficult to convey with pigment, so one casts about for ways to IMPLY its brilliance. The original meaning of the word "dither" is "to tremble."
