In order to suggest the strong light on the chest and shoulder I ended up slathering on paint. It seemed that the gray background could not be killed in this area without a heavy barrage of thick pigment.  Some of the exaggerated color in this image can be explained by the dim lighting conditions in which I was painting: the colors look a bit explosive when the painting is brought out into the light.
