I have been going to an open studio where they do not put a strong light on the model, as is done everywhere else, for the most part. It's a challenge to work without deep shadows contrasted against light areas, rather working only with subtle variations of different grays. Some of the figure painters I like most paint with this type of lighting on the model, notably Jeremy Lipking, so I will accept the challenge and see how well I can do...
